Cubed Series Amplifiers
Bryston's Cubed Series Amplifiers made its debut in 2016, replacing the SST Squared Series. Bryston Loudspeakers
Believe it or not, speakers weren't always a part of Bryston's repertoire. What began as an experiment between CEO James Tanner and loudspeaker engineer friend Ian Colquhoun of Axiom Audio quickly developed into a collection of superbly accurate loudspeakers. Tanner set out to design a fully active, no-holds-barred speaker system that he could use to test Bryston's electronics at home. The Model T was created to serve as a showcase loudspeaker that could demonstrate the clarity and dynamic range of Bryston's award-winning electronics and led to an entire T series named after Tanner. Since then, Bryston has produced a full line, building on the engineering effort that went into the flagship model. Today, Bryston sells a range of T Series passive loudspeakers and three T Series active loudspeakers.

All Bryston speakers are available in active or passive versions, but any passive version can be easily modified to an active version by changing ot the passive crossover for the active. The terms "active" and "passive" refer to the type of crossover network the speaker uses. A crossover network directs frequencies to the appropriate driver. A passive crossover has components such as inductors, capacitors, and resistors to create the filters for the frequency responses for each driver inside the speaker. You simply connect your speaker amplifier to the speaker and the crossover in the speaker does the work dividing up the frequencies. An active crossover is an external electronic device that has a power supply and will connect between your preamplifier and your amplifiers for the speakers. It will divide the frequency responses required for each driver set, and it will require you to have an amplifier channel for each grouping of drivers that cover a set of frequency responses. In an active loudspeaker, each driver is powered by an independent amplifier channel, as opposed to a passive crossover where only one amplifier channel powers all of the drivers in the speaker.
Bryston Active Loudspeaker Setup
The Bryston Active Loudspeaker System takes performance to the next level. Most fully active systems restrict your choice of preamplifier and amplifiers by building in often inferior models into the loudspeakers. Bryston’s system includes a high-resolution external digital crossover, the BAX-1, that accepts input from your favorite stereo analog preamplifier and outputs analog signal to your choice of amplifiers. The BAX-1 makes it easy to choose the amplifiers that work best for your listening preferences. A key advantage to placing an electronic crossover (Bryston BAX-1 Active crossover) between the preamplifier and the power amplifier is signal level. In an active system, all speaker control (crossover slopes, crossover points, gain etc.) is performed at low signal levels, whereas passive crossovers operate at high signal levels.
The overall benefits of an active system include increased flexibility of filter shapes, the ability to make fine-grained adjustments resulting in improved on and off axis response (these are often competing objectives in passive loudspeakers), direct coupling of the amplifier to the driver (avoiding losses inherent in passive crossovers), and higher SPL with lower distortion.
The Middle T, and Model T Active Loudspeakers require you to use the BAX-1 digital crossover and three amplifier channels per speaker. For example, you could use two 21B Cubed amplifiers (three channels each) or three 2.5B Cubed Amplifier (two channels each). The 21B Cubed Monoblock Amplifier provides two channels at 300 watts for the high and middle frequencies and a whopping 600 watts for the bass frequencies. One important aspect of the Bryston Active System that is critical to its performance is that each loudspeaker model and BAX-1 Digital Crossover combination is optimized using the factory anechoic chamber, utilizing over 300 measurements. This ensures that the software controlling the active digital crossover maintains the optimal "sound power response" for each Bryston Active Speaker Model.

The embedded clock signals are thrown out, and all incoming PCM data is re-clocked with Bryston's own high-precision internal master clock for the lowest possible jitter. Who is Bryston?
Bryston Audio is a renowned Canadian high-end audio equipment manufacturer with a rich history spanning several decades. Bryston Audio was founded in 1963 by Tony Bower, Stan Rybb, and John Stoneborough—using the starting letters of their surnames to make "Bryston." But Bryston didn't start out making audio equipment. Back then, Bryston manufactured high-tech blood analyzers and precision medical equipment. It wasn't until 1968 when ex-NASA engineer John W. Russell purchased the company that Bryston dipped it toes into the hi-fi market.
In the early 1970s, Bryston's direction changed significantly. Chris Russell, John's son, had developed a passion for high-quality audio and began experimenting with amplifier designs. This hobby soon turned into a serious business venture when Bryston was approached by a man named James Tanner who found that his Dynaco amplifier couldn't drive his new Dayton Wright electrostatic speakers. Tanner, who was a partner in Whitby Audio in Toronto, heard about Bryston through word of mouth, and was introduced to Chris who modified his amplifier. From there, Chris decided to build an amplifier from scratch using medical-grade parts. This amplifier became the Pro 3 amplifier (later renamed 3B), and went on to win a sound quality competition at a local major recording studio. The studio ordered several Pro 3's from Bryston and that began the company's transition to an audio engineering firm, with Chris Russell serving as vice president of engineering (later CEO). In 1978, James Tanner was hired to manage Canadian sales for Bryston. It was the 4B amplifier that year that really put the company on the consumer hi-fi map.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Bryston expanded its product line, introducing preamplifiers, power amplifiers, and other audio components. Bryston's amplifiers became particularly popular in professional audio circles, finding their way into recording studios and broadcast facilities due to their durability and sonic accuracy. In the 2000s, Bryston expanded into new product categories, introducing their first loudspeaker in 2012.
