Design
Physically, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 and the first-generation iCAN PHANTOM bear a striking resemblance. Lifting the PHANTOM 1.5 out of the box, I was met with a durable, solidly built unit. I've always admired the iCAN PHANTOM for its unique design, emulating what you'd think are two separate components stacked on top of each other. Peer into the glass top panel and you get an inside look at the internal circuitry. The warm red glow of the NOS GE5670 tubes radiates in the top right corner–a subtle detail that makes the overall experience magical.
Another cleverly magical moment happens when you turn the unit on and off. Press the power button on the left and watch the volume wheel on the right glow green as the unit warms up. Once on, the volume wheel auto-attenuates to its last setting and drops back down to zero when the unit's turned off. A quick note: you cannot disable this function, so be mindful of where the volume's set before you turn the device off. I'd recommend making a habit of turning it to zero when you're done listening to avoid bursting your eardrums the next time you plug in a pair of cans.
As for the PHANTOM 1.5's overall build quality and design, iFi added an anti-fingerprint treatment to the chassis to keep the top panel's smoked glass looking pristine. The front panel received a slight cosmetic upgrade with subtle changes to the text and spacing between output ports. Speaking of which, everything you need to control the PHANTOM 1.5 is accessible directly on the front panel, either through the physical buttons or display screen menus. Cycle between two electrostatic headphone outputs, one for custom/pro and one for normal, a pair of balanced 3-pin XLR L/R outputs which double as stereo single-ended 6.3mm jacks, a 3.5mm output, and a balanced 4.4mm output. The six bias memory cards cleverly hidden on the back panel slide into a dedicated slot on the front with an independent ESL power button for electrostatic headphones.
On the back panel, you'll find a suite of inputs and outputs: one pair of 3-pin XLR inputs, 3 pairs of RCA analog inputs, one pair of 3-pin XLR outputs, one pair of RCA outputs, and a DC 12V-15V power input for the included power supply. You've got everything you need to use the PHANTOM 1.5 as a headphone amplifier for personal listening or as a preamplifier in a 2-channel system. The bias memory cards are stored directly above the back panel connections.
There are many features and display screen prompts on the PHANTOM 1.5 that I could dive into, but the real value lies in its sound and amplification. Heat is dispersed beautifully through sinks on the side panels and a uniquely shaped round dome on the top. I had the unit on for about half of my 8-hour workday, and while it got warm, it never got hot. I'd consider that a win.
Sound
I like to think I'm pretty well-versed in setting up and using hi-fi gear, but the PHANTOM 1.5 was my greatest challenge yet. After clearing a spot at my desk, I unboxed the unit, connected it to the iFi Audio iDSD Valkyrie DAC/Headphone Amplifier using our Silver Dragon RCA Interconnects (which are connected to my computer via our Silver Dragon USB Cable), and arranged my headphones and IEMs around it. That part was easy. When it came time to plug in the first pair of headphones, the Audeze CRBN2 Electrostatic Headphones, I froze. I have an embarrassing confession to make. In all my years reviewing gear, I've never used Electrostatic Headphones. In my defense, they're not the most common headphone type on the market, so it wasn't until we got a pair of the CRBN 2s and the PHANTOM 1.5 arrived that the opportunity presented itself.
I'm not one to skip reading the user manual, but it was the end of the workday, and I was in a rush, so I decided to give it a try on my own. I spent 10 minutes searching for the bias memory cards, rummaging through the box, and inspecting the chassis like a hawk. I'd just about given up when I decided it was time to look at the manual, and just as I suspected, the memory cards were hiding in plain sight right under my nose. I'll slap myself on the wrist for not reviewing the manual from the start, and give iFi Audio 5 gold stars for hiding the memory cards so well. Once I located them, I pulled out the 580V card, popped it into the front panel slot, and from that point forward it was smooth sailing.
Before I started listening to the CRBN 2s, my boss, Moon Audio's CEO Drew Baird, P.E., warned me I would fall in love with electrostatics. Well, Drew, you weren't wrong. That's exactly what happened, and I fear you may have to pry these from my hands–just kidding! The CRBN 2s took an ordinary headphone listening experience and transformed it into that of a 2-channel system with dedicated loudspeakers.
Tube+ mode with the CRBN2 was a standout for me. Before I knew it, I had flown through Ariana Grande's Petal album, just bopping along and humming here and there. I wasn't listening intently; I was getting lost in the moment. For me, that's the difference between a good component and a great one. It can pull me out of a moment, whether that's a stressful day at work or R&R after a long week. The unique twang of The 1975's Lead Singer, Matty Healy's voice, was vibrant over the CRBN2s. A song I've heard hundreds of times was brand new.
Listening with the Dan Clark Audio E3 Planar Magnetic Headphones, a moderately hard-to-drive unit, the PHANTOM's power became evident. The E3 has clean, natural production, and at just +12dB gain in solid-state mode, the PHANTOM 1.5 brought the harmonious vocals in California Dreamin' to life. Switching to tube mode, I was met with a richer presentation oozing musicality. I'm a warm and musical listener, so I knew loving the PHANTOM's tube sound would come naturally. The congas in Bill Withers' track Just the Two of Us were distinctly bold and round. I caught myself dancing in my chair to the Caribbean melody multiple times during my listening session. The Phantom's tube+ mode pushes the NOS GE5670 tube's warmth even further. The presentation became liquid and lush in the best way possible. Details and image weren't masked by excessive warmth. Bill Withers' vocals became silky smooth, gliding across the track's instruments.
The fact that I enjoyed my entire listening session with the E3 Headphones at a mere 9 on the volume level is a testament to the Phantom's sheer power. But the real test would be how it performs with the Audeze CRBN2 Headphones and a pair of 64 Audio IEMs.
Switching over to the 64 Audio Volür IEMs, I was thrilled to discover that iFi Audio included its iEMatch technology to eliminate background hiss and restore dynamic range. It's not a feature that's always needed, but it's nice to have. Without it enabled, I did hear some audible background hiss without any music playing, but once I enabled -12 dB, it went away. I performed the same order of operations: listen with solid-state, jump to tube, and finish in tube+ mode.
The Volür is a richly musical and bass-forward IEM, so I was curious to see how the PHANTOM 1.5's tubes would alter the sound signature. You've got the included apex modules to adjust the IEM's tonality slightly, but if you're a basshead like me, they're perfect just the way they are. In solid-state mode, the Volürs were quick and full of energy with EDM tracks. The IEM's already powerful presentation wasn't muddied, but accentuated with a quick decay and an energetic punch. Tube mode rounded the snappy synth beat in Ty Dolla $ign's EDM remix of Blasé. Switching over to pop, Ariana Grande's vocals were rich and lush. Tube+ boosted the mid-bass and midrange melodies in Grande's track Freak. After cycling through several of her tracks, I concluded that tube mode was my personal pick here, but that's the great thing about the PHANTOM 1.5. While tube+ mode was almost too lush for Grande's tracks, it was the perfect choice for more neutral and airy presentations like Saturday in the Park by Chicago.
The PHANTOM 1.5's solid-state amplification is powerful, clean, and authentic. It leaves the coloration and warmth to the vacuum tubes. The unit comes equipped with iFi Audio's sound shaping tools, xSpace and xBass, which I didn't even use because it didn't need any extra help. It's perfect just the way it is. The iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is a formidable force for audiophiles craving flexibility in their setup. With the ability to switch quickly between three distinct amplification modes and enough power to drive everything from sensitive IEMs to notoriously difficult electrostatic headphones, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 doesn't force you to pick a lane. It puts you in the driver's seat of your listening experience, where you can make as many or as few adjustments as you like.

It's often said that less is more, and while I agree with that sentiment nine times out of ten, there is an exception to the rule–when vacuum tubes are involved. Ever since I listened to my first tube headphone amplifier, the Moon Audio Dragon Inspire IHA-1, I immediately understood what all the hype was about.

Tube mode rounds the edges and adds body; the congas in Just the Two of Us came through bold and round, and I couldn't stop dancing in my chair. Tube+ mode takes it further into lush, liquid territory. With the PHANTOM 1.5 energizing the Audeze CRBN2 Electrostatic Headphones, my desk setup felt less like headphone listening and more like sitting in front of a pair of well-placed loudspeakers. I flew through an entire album without noticing, and that's the highest compliment I can give any component.
